Join your tour guide/driver, for a 350 mile long journey from Skagway to Haines. Travel through untouched wilderness for much of the way, staying a night in each of these towns: Skagway, AK, Whitehorse, Yukon, Haines Junction, Yukon and Haines, AK. This tour may be private or shared.
** What you’ll see:
This 360 mile long tour contains some of North America’s grandest scenery and wildest places. If you come in September or October, you will view Fall colors. Any month, you'll pass boreal forests, alpine vistas, immense ice fields, many sparkling lakes, the smallest desert in the world and a coastal rainforest. You'll make numerous stops along the way for photos, wildlife sightings and exploring time.
**What you'll do:
On this trip, you may choose from several options. During the fall, you most likely will view the Northern Lights. If you join us before October 1st, you may take an historic train ride over White Pass or Michelle Phillip's Tutshi Lake Dog Mushing Camp. You'll spend a night in Whitehorse, Yukon, where you may experience a riverboat, a museum and a Vaudeville Gold Rush Show, You'll have a chance to visit a traditional Native fishing village, where they live 50 years in the past. You'll be able to spend your last night near Haines, the Bald Eagle Capital of the World, possibly viewing Grizzlies from the deck of your cabin, as they dine on salmon.
Starting in the Gold Rush Town of Skagway, Alaska, you'll cross White’s Pass via van or train, continuing to the capitol city of the Yukon, Whitehorse. From there, you will wrap around to Haines, as you travel over the Chilkat Pass, following the river that is home to thousands of Bald Eagles. You’ll spend your last night in a cabin overlooking where Grizzlies are known to dine on Sockeye Salmon when the run is on during September. Take the ferry from Haines back to Juneau for your connecting flight back home.
** Where you’ll sleep and eat:
We will stay in cabins that are clean and beautifully modern on the inside, yet have that rustic, log cabin look on the outside. We will eat dinners at restaurants near where we spend the night. Transportation is provided to restaurant. Lunch is included, and will be eaten from our well stocked cooler at scenic picnic stops along the way. September and October are choice months for Fall Colors, but we can arrange a tour any month.
You may choose to enjoy the 3 day Alaska State Ferry from Washington State. It leaves Bellingham on Friday and arrives in Skagway on Monday. If you want to fly to Juneau, shorter ferry rides from Juneau to Skagway arrive daily. You may opt to make your trip last longer. If it were me, I would choose to stay two nights in Haines Junction, near the Kluane National Park. There is so many outdoor activities to do there. That would add $250 each, to the cost of a 4night/5day trip, turning it into a 5night/6day trip.
**Itinerary: Flexible according to your interests.
2pm: Arrive by ferry in Skagway, (if that's the option you choose)
Your guide picks you up and take you to your room. You may explore town on your own,
5pm: Meet your guide for dinner in Skagway.
8am: Breakfast, then leave Skagway, either by train or in van.
If you chose the train ride over White's Pass, you'll be picked up two hours later in Fraser, for the rest of your trip.
Noon: Picnic lunch at lake overlook in Carcross, (small Yukon village).
2pm: Arrive in Whitehorse, get settled in room then have free time to yourself.
8am: Leave Whitehorse, stopping along the way for photos. Stop for picnic lunch, and to check out Dall Sheep and an optional flight see over Kluane National Park. HIke a trail.
5pm: Arrive in Haines Junction; check in at cabin and go to dinner.
8am: Leave Haines Junction, stopping for photos. Take a hike, if you'd like. Eat lunch at a scenic picnic spot over looking the largest congregation of Bald Eagles found anywhere in the world. (Highest numbers takes place in October and November)
3pm: Arrive in Haines and check into lodge room, Notice if the bears are eating salmon in Chilkoot Lake or in the river, then enjoy dinner on the lodge deck or drive back into Haines, according to the weather.
8am-Noon: Enjoy a relaxing morning. Perhaps you'll watch bears and eagles eating Salmon caught from the river, while you enjoy a cup of coffee and breakfast on the back deck. You will then head to the ferry landing, for your ferry ride back to Juneau.
